The human species is doing well for itself, about nine thousand years ago when humans invented agriculture, there were maybe one million humans on this blue planet then in the 1800s, we reached a billion in the late 1920s we passed the two billion mark and by 1960 we passed three billion, In 2018 there are 7.6 billion people .you might want to check where we are currently you will be surprised, One might wonder what the major contributing factors to this rapid population growth even though humanity has faced major disease outbreaks and two major wars plus devastating conflict here and there in every corner of the globe yet humanity is thriving.
We thank improvements in agricultural practice and better sanitary practices and medicine in making vaccines and antibiotics, in the past if you got an infection you just might be dead in a week, life expectancy was low and infant mortality was high.
ARE WE MAKING PROGRESS?
Humans have made tremendous progress in science and technology, we can travel faster we can see distant stars, and we have developed better ways to kill each other and still developing. we have made some progress despite our challenges as a species which is mainly conflict. Is it possible to have a world with little or no form of conflict to an optimist the answer is YES personally I am optimistic there will come a time when there will be little or no conflict. With all this progress towards an easier way of living are our lives easier? are our different human experiences really happy ones, there is an increase in the number person using antidepressants, alcohol and drugs to make the bad experiences go away which always don’t, increase in the number of suicides and drug-related deaths and this is a trend many fear the worse. There is a continuous unequal increase in the distribution of wealth. Our natural world is not spared in the progress of rapid Industrialization is causing climate changes, gross loss of wildlife and natural habitat
Of the numerous definitions of a rat race which is an endless mindless pursuit in a way of life without time to relax, reflect and contemplate. Humanity needs to contemplate where this mindless so-called progress is taking us. Policies and actions of governments and powerful individuals need to be geared towards a happier larger population and not towards a greedy few, Fairness and justice for all, peace and reconciliation commitment toward climate actions. Education and social norms toward sustainable lifestyles that do not do more damage to our planet.
