Scientists didn’t just wake up one day and decide how humans came to be. They spent years collecting evidence, like fossils and DNA, to back up the theory of evolution. This theory explains that over a very, very long time, living things change bit by bit. These tiny changes, gathered over millions of years, led from the very first simple life forms to all the animals, plants, and humans we see today.
It Works With Other Scientific Discoveries
The evolution theory fits perfectly with other things science has discovered, including facts about space and Earth itself. When we look at religious stories, they often don’t agree with these scientific discoveries, which makes them less likely to be true.
The Problems with Relying on Religious Stories
They Can Cause Conflict
Throughout history, differing religious beliefs have led to many wars and conflicts. For instance, the Crusades in the Middle East were Christian-led expeditions against Muslim territories. Similarly, Islamic expansion following the death of Muhammed led to numerous wars, both within the Muslim community (like the wars of apostasy) and against non-Muslim empires. Religion has also been a factor in conflicts in regions like Northern Ireland, where Protestant and Catholic communities clashed, and in India, where historical tensions between Hindus and Muslims have sometimes turned violent. These events highlight how strongly held beliefs can lead to large-scale unrest and conflict.
They Can Separate People
Religions often come with strict rules that encourage discrimination against those who do not follow the same path. In many societies, this has led to the unfair treatment of people based on their religious background, creating divisions and fostering resentment. Historically, this segregation has even been endorsed by laws; for example, the caste system in India was used to justify discrimination for centuries.
They are Created by Humans
Over time, we have seen signs that religious stories were created by people, adapting to the needs and knowledge of society at that time. These stories sometimes contain historical inaccuracies and mirror the biases of the era they were created in, including unequal treatment of women, minorities, and other groups, which is evident in many ancient texts and practices.
While it’s true that religious stories can give people comfort and a sense of belonging, they have many drawbacks. The theory of evolution, based on solid evidence and supported by many different scientific discoveries, offers a more realistic explanation of where we come from. It encourages us to keep asking questions and looking for real answers, helping us to grow and learn together, building a future based on truth and understanding, not division and conflict.
